Erasing Hell: What God Says About Eternity And The Things We've Made Up

Sprinkle did the extensive research and Chan tells the story. Basically this book is a rebuttal of Rob Bell’s impressions about hell in his book, “Love Wins.” While Bell surmises that “hell is very real experiences and consequences of rejecting our God-given goodness and humanity,” he says it is important that “we don’t take Jesus’ very real and prescient about judgment out of context, making them about someday, somewhere else.” Chan contends that virtually everything that Bell says about hell has to do with the various kinds of hell here on earth, the evils of this world.

Bell and Sprinkle takes the rest of book, citing numerous Scriptures, to make their case that there is a very real place called hell where unrepentant sinners will spend eternity. Chan makes an excellent and convicting observation in chapter 6 about other acts that God has done that he (Chan) wouldn’t have done – such as kill all but 8 people in the flood, having the Israelites slaughter all the inhabitants of Canaan, command Ezekiel to lie on his right side for 390 days, cook food over human dung, not mourn his wife’s death, etc. He then states: “Would you have thought to rescue sinful people from their sins by sending your Son to take on human flesh? Would you have thought to allow your created beings to torture your Son, lacerate His flesh with whips, and then drive nails thought His hands and feet? I’m almost sure I would not have done that if I were God. Aren’t you glad I’m not God?”
This book would be a great tool if one has friends who don’t believe, or don’t want to believe that hell exists because God is a good and loving God. If that question is settled in your mind, Chan will reinforce those beliefs. I’d give it a 6 out of 10 (musical) notes on a scale of 1-10.
